An aging workforce, lack of skilled workers, high training costs … the maritime industry is faced with a number of challenges that can no longer be ignored.  In response to these and other workforce challenges, NMEC has been working to fund and develop a national workforce development system for the industry.  These efforts are taking shape.  Through NCCER, with input from subject matter experts from member companies, Level 1 of the standardized Maritime Pipefitting curriculum is  available now; Level 2 will be released soon.  The Structural Fitting curriculum and companion entry-level assessment will follow by the end of this year.

The maritime industry is on the cusp of a profound change in terms of workforce development.  One organization cannot transform an industry; but it can plant the seed of change.  It will take the collaboration of shipyards, offshore marine, education and training providers , trade associations, skilled trade providers, suppliers, and other key stakeholders to make the seed grow.

NMEC’s Fall Meeting will be held at NCCER in Alachua, Florida.  This practical meeting is for key stakeholders who work in the maritime industry or who support the industry through workforce development including
